By- admin on May 05, 2018
Gutter cleaning is one of the most important parts of your house cleaning chore. Your gutters can easily get clogged up leaving your home’s woodwork damaged. During the winter season, the trapped water in the gutter will surely freeze and expand ruining the structure and lining of the gutter. However, cleaning a high gutter is particularly a hectic task. It requires plenty of attention to keep the ladder stable and the gutter needs to be cleaned methodically with your hands.
Before you Begin Remember to set up the Ladder Properly
The ladder needs to be positioned from the place where you begin cleaning. It should be leaned against the wall of your house. Otherwise, to make yourself comfortable and stress-free, you can attach the ladder to the gutter with a fastener. Before you climb the ladder, check its stability by cautiously climbing a step or two. If the ladder wobbles or leans, reposition it until it’s sturdy.
In case the ground is soft, place a wooden scrap under the feet of the ladder to prevent it from sinking. Test the ladder for its stability and continue repositioning if required.
Debris Disposal by Hand
Gutter cleaning is a dirty work and due to its sharp edges, it runs the risks of injuries when cleaning. Therefore, it is important to wear durable rubber gloves and cleaning clothes when doing the job.
Ensure that you wear long sleeve shirt while cleaning your gutter as this will protect your skin from insects and sharp edges.
Never forget to wear a face mask while cleaning a gutter in dry days and dusty areas to protect yourself from dust and pollen irritating your lungs.
Use the rubber gloves to scoop the debris build-up from your gutter. Otherwise, you can use tools such as a garden trowel, hand spade or a plastic scoop for gutters cleaning across Inner West. Only remove debris from the areas that you can comfortably reach since over-reaching while on the ladder could result in a fall.
When you have cleared a section of debris, reposition the ladder to reach the neighboring section of gutter. Clear the gutter as described and continue until the entire gutter is completely cleaned
Flushing the Gutter with Water
Take the garden hose and fasten it with a pole or sturdy branch. Once done, turn it on and apply it towards the gutter and start flushing the entire gutter clean. However, note that downspouts can have blockages. If you suspect a blockage in the downspout, set the ladder up beside the spout and tap along with a screwdriver. A dull thudding sound will indicate a blockage. The blockages can be removed by unfastening the downspouts and pressure washing them.
